Grocery Shopping Hands-Free with Your Smartphone?
At first I was just going to say grocery shopping with your smartphone. However, we felt that would lead you to believe we were talking about the many apps where you can access online grocery shopping and delivery stores. This is different. This is new.
In South Korea, there’s a fresh take on ‘waiting for the subway’. Commuters who are on the platform can now mark something off of their to-do list while they’re waiting for the subway. Grocery shopping! It doesn’t matter if you’re on the way to the office, either. You can buy as many groceries as you want and never have to carry a bag.
The walls inside the subway platform waiting area are lined with images of the things you would normally find in the grocery store and they’re life-size. Real-looking. Not tiny little clips. It looks like you’re actually in a grocery store. By using QR codes, commuters simply scan the items that they want. In effect, they’re purchasing and doing their grocery shopping and the groceries will be delivered to their door.
Homeless New York Man Uses Business Sense to Make $20K+
Every day in New York hundreds of metro-cards are thrown in the trash or even better yet, just tossed away to the ground. One homeless man with an entrepreneurial spirit didn’t see this as littering or trash, but as an income sitting right in front of him. He collects all the metro-cards that he can find, because many times, these cards have an unused balance on them. Most of the time it’s only a buck or two, but that can add up. And every now and then he finds one with much more on it. Regardless, he has been making a living reselling these cards. In fact, he’s made over $20 thousand with reselling metro-cards alone.
The authorities say that it’s illegal for him to do so (although no major action has been taken against him). He says he has been arrested a couple of times, but that it hasn’t stopped him and he definitely has no intention on stopping in the future.
News from 2011 that won’t be Forgotten Anytime Soon…
The Southside Slayer – or Grim Sleeper
The Southside Slayer, who authorities believe probably killed hundreds of women, is finally brought in. Authorities found over 1,000 photos of women in his home. Of those 1,000 women, some were conscious and some were not. He is believed to have document his attacks with a polaroid camera, as one victim who managed to escape recalls being awoken from an unconscious state by the flash of his camera.
His name is Lonnie David Franklin and DNA was not immediately available to match him to the suspected associated victims. However, a federal detective went undercover to pose as a waiter where they believe Lonnie frequented. Indeed, he did show up and the DNA from the dishes and pizza crust was able to be matched to a victim. He’s currently being held with no option to post bail on the account of 10 murder charges and one attempted murder.
Rise of the Bedbugs
Bedbugs were nothing shocking in the U.S. back before World War II. However, once pesticides became commonplace and the introduction of DDT, they virtually disappeared. That is until the summer of 2010, when bedbugs began to make an enormous comeback all across the United States. They not only showed up in homes all across the nation, but in hotels (well there are beds in hotels!). More shockingly, they even appeared in restaurants and malls.
Many people automatically assume that bedbugs are a hygiene issue and therefore would mostly only affect low-grade hotels or run-down homes. Far from the truth, though. Even high-end hotels that are meticulous about cleanliness and maintaining an upscale atmosphere found themselves dealing with the pesky little creatures.
Bedbugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Where there may only be a few little suckers attached to piece of clothing, they quickly multiply and you end up facing an outbreak of them everywhere from your bed to your sofa and carpet. Bedbugs can be the culprit of many adverse health reactions, ranging from rashes to allergic-like side effects.
Recent studies have shown that their reappearance was largely due to the fact their genetic makeup has shifted. They aren’t affected by pesticides and chemicals as they once were. We’re basically dealing with an entirely different little creature than in the 1940’s. Some of the treatments used to eradicate the problem are using extreme cold and extreme heat.
