A Central Florida job resource center is closing at a time when unemployment is as high as it has been in five years.

Nearly every computer is in use at the Workforce Central Florida Job Resource Center in Pine Hills, a place that provides assistance in finding employment.

"Right now I'm working part time and it’s iffy so I'm looking for full-time employment," Shelicia Hines said.

"It lets me check my e-mails to see if anyone's looked at my resumes," Sabrina Scott said.

But even with a high demand, the location is closing because of budget problems.

Starting Tuesday, everybody in Orange County will need to use the East Colonial location.

"Everybody cannot afford bus passes or gas to drive to the east side. A lot of people live in this area," Hines said.

"I don't have a computer at home so it's very convenient to have something like this is this area," Scott said.

"It's never easy to shut down something that we know people need," Gary Earl said.

The way the budget works is that it's delayed a year and a half. Central Florida was doing well when the budget was created so the amount it was allocated in the budget was reduced. Now that the unemployment is the highest it has been in five years and the money is needed, it isn't there.

"We can't afford to operate all the bricks and mortar. So in an effort to preserve services, it's going to have to be at the expense of brick and mortar," Earl said.

The job search services will continue -- perhaps with computers at libraries, churches or community centers.

The resource center in Lake Mary will close this fall.
