2nd Case Of MRSA Confirmed At High School
17-Year-Old Football Player Diagnosed
Another Liberty High School football player has been diagnosed with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.This news comes a little more then a week after the Osceola County Health Department confirmed that Liberty running back Alonzo Smith’s death was the result of a MRSA infection.
The Health Department confirmed on Thursday that a 17-year-old Liberty football player has tested positive for the MRSA skin infection. He was admitted to a hospital with a skin infection on his elbow. The MRSA has not gotten in the student's blood, as it had with Smith, said health officials. He is expected to be released from the hosptial Thursday, said health officials.Students do not seem to be worried about MRSA. "We're not a dirty school. Everybody has MRSA; it just depends on if you have a cut and take care of it," said Paul Garceau, a ninth-grader at Liberty. Most parents, however, seem very concerned. "I'm not bringing my daughter to school. No. I'm not going to take that chance with my child," said Betty Villafane. As of Thursday, five students have been tested for MRSA. The results have not yet been released.
