John Edwards and Mary Elizabeth Anania are married.

November 1998
John wins a U.S. Senate seat for the state of North Carolina after defeating Republican incumbent Sen. Lauch Faircloth.

July 6, 2004
After his failed attempt at the Democratic nomination, Edwards is named Sen. John Kerry's running mate for the 2004 presidential election.

Nov. 3, 2004
Elizabeth Edwards is diagnosed with breast cancer.

December 2006
Rielle Hunter is hired by Edwards' campaign to produce a series of webisodes.

October 2007
The National Enquirer first reports Edwards-Hunter affair; Edwards publicly denies it.

March 2007
Elizabeth discovers her cancer has returned.

December 19, 2007
The Enquirer publishes follow-up story that includes a photograph of a visibly pregnant Hunter.

Feb. 27, 2008
Hunter gives birth to daughter named Frances Quinn Hunter. No father's name is given on the birth certificate filed in California.

July 21, 2008
Edwards visits Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton. His wife had not known about the meeting.

Aug. 8, 2008
John Edwards releases statement admitting his affair with the filmmaker.
