Storms Leave Damage Across Central Florida

POSTED: 7:52 am EDT April 16, 2007
UPDATED: 9:24 am EDT April 16, 2007

Residents of the Dell Lake Village mobile home park are cleaning up after Sunday's severe weather damaged 18 homes.

Six of the homes were destroyed in the storms, WESH 2 News reported.

No injuries were reported, and it's still not clear whether high winds or a tornado were to blame.

Most of the damage occurred to rooftops of the mobile homes. Insulation and aluminum went flying everywhere, and several homeowners lost their sunrooms. One man just bought his place last week.

"You could just hear a noise, and I thought, 'Boy, there's aluminium and look at the insulation flying and foam blowing everywhere,' and I was wondering what went wrong, and as soon as it went by, and I went outside and looked, and it was our roof that was blown right off," resident Jack Paletski said.

Homeowners said they have insurance, so many of them are breathing a sigh of relief.

Tree Falls On Audubon Park Home

An Orlando woman is assessing the damage to her home after Sunday's strong storms.

A giant oak tree came crashing down on the roof of 85-year-old Gladys Shultz's Audobon Park home.

Shultz spent 15 years as a crossing guard for Audubon Elementary School, and the work has apparently paid off. Neighbors are now lining up to lend her a helping hand.

"You don't know what it's like to live around good people. Anything they can do to help, they help. Anything I can do to help, I help," Schultz said.

One neighbor said it looks like the home may have to be demolished. Schultz is insured and is now living with a next-door neighbor.

Marion County Home Condemned After Storm

A falling tree also caused big problems for a family in Marion County.

Family members said they heard a crack just before a giant tree tumbled onto the roof of their home near Belleview.

Seven people were inside at the time, including several small children.

Inspectors have condemned the home.

"It hit it right in the middle. We rushed out and went over to see the family, and it turned out that no one was hurt, and one of them was crying, so it was really a shock to them," neighbor John Cemeno said. "They're very fortunate they were in the opposite room from where the tree fell through."

The homeowners told their neighbors they just paid their insurance three days ago.

Lightning Strikes Couple At Park

Two people enjoying a trip to Moss park on Sunday learned the dangers of lightning during severe weather.

Lightning hit a nearby tree at the park, traveled through the ground and shocked a woman, throwing her to the ground.

The strike also stunned her boyfriend who was sitting on a personal watercraft on the lake.

The woman suffered a headache and fainted, but both decided not to go to a hospital.

Windy Weather May Be Blamed For Fatal Crash

The strong winds on Sunday may be to blame for a car accident that killed a 12-year-old girl.

The crash happened on Interstate 4 near state Road 44.

Troopers said the girl was traveling in a car while here on vacation from Korea.

Investigators said the driver tried to switch lanes but lost control of the car. That may be because of a gust of wind.
