Tornado Damages Cocoa Beach Condos

POSTED: 5:32 am EST February 13, 2008
UPDATED: 10:55 am EST February 13, 2008

A tornado ripped the roofs off two Cocoa Beach condominium complexes Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at the Diplomat and Wind Rush Condominiums along state Road A1A.

Residents were forced to flee from their homes, but officials said no serious injuries were reported during the storm.

James Gunn's condominium seemed to have a bullseye on it. That's why he's moving out with whatever he can carry.

"It was kind of devastating because I had just moved in less than a week ago," Gunn said.

The cleanup has already started, but it will take more than a day to complete and a much longer amount of time to forget.

"I just heard a tremendous crash out front, like an ungodly crash, and that's it right there, that's hiding my front door," Christina Schwinn said as she pointed to large piece of storm debris.

"We had seen it come over the roof, and then it slammed into the other village there, the condos," witness James Pennington said.

Pennington said he believes a tornado picked up the roof of a building and carried it to another complex nearby. The storm debris littered a parking lot.

"Two of those three vehicles that are covered belong to me and my boyfriend, so we're kind of in shock right now," Schwinn said.

Elsewhere, power lines came down, portable generators came on, and trees fell.

"This was gorgeous tree. It was just beautiful, and we looked out and everything was just lying, the wind was blowing it almost flat," homeowner Mary Griffith said.

In all, 16 condominiums were declared uninhabitable.

"The Red Cross said they might have some help for me, but if not, I've got family, so I'll be alright," Gunn said.

The roofs that were ripped off the two condominium complexes were rebuilt after the 2004 hurricanes.
