Florida is bracing for the worst as the deadly Tropical Storm Hanna barrels its way to a state that can barely handle anymore rain.In Melbourne, Fla., alone, homeowners have recorded more than 21 inches in rainfall.
To make matters worse, people are still recovering from Tropical Storm Fay. The storm eroded beaches that are now being battered by more wind and heavy surf generated by Hanna.Disaster officials said that storm waves have done about $2.5 million to Brevard County beaches. The beach management coordinator said the beaches in general are still in fairly good shape, though, with no public or private property in imminent danger.Lifeguards have raised red flags, warning swimmers to stay out of the water. More than a dozen swimmers had to be rescued this week.Further inland, people are picking up sandbags in Melbourne. And along the St. Johns River, the water is still rising and still threatening homes. The 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, which gained distinction with rescues over New Orleans three years ago, has taken its aircraft and para-rescuemen to a safer base, in case they're needed in Florida.Brevard County has begun hurriedly picking up piles of debris left behind by Fay, which could clog drains or become flying objects if Hanna churns closer.
