CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Tropical Storm Hanna will bring rough surf conditions to Central Florida's beaches over the next several days.
The Brevard County Health Department issued a warning to swimmers to exercise caution along the coast.
Authorities issued a swimming advisory because floodwaters from Tropical Storm Fay are being pumped into the Atlantic Ocean. The pumping raised concerns among visitors to the beaches."I think there's all sorts of concerns, you know, MRSA, and all sorts of bacterial infections. If somebody's got a mosquito bite and has opened it up, it could get infected. You just don't know how that could affect the bloodstream," Kathy Roberts said."I'm trying to stay out of the water because of the concerns of bacteria," a beachgoer said. The beach at popular Jetty Park and at Harbor Drive could be closed until bacterial tests confirm the water is safe.Patrick Air Force Base is closing its popular surfing beaches because of 10-foot waves and strong rip currents.Sandbag sites are also popping up everywhere in Brevard County. County jail inmates are filling up free sandbags for people in Cocoa -- people whose neighborhoods flooded or are still at risk of flooding from the St. Johns River after Tropical Storm Fay.Officials will conduct several water tests on Thursday and will know if the swimming advisory can be lifted on Friday.
